Amy Cheng
Amy concentrates her practice in domestic and international commercial transactions, general corporate, and franchise, licensing and distribution law.
With her broad range of experience, Amy acts as general counsel to her clients in order to take their businesses from the start-up phase to becoming prominent players within their various industries.
Amy's commercial transactional practice includes counseling clients on mergers and acquisitions, complex commercial relationships, structuring, and drafting contracts for business transactions; while her general corporate practice includes corporate formation, strategic business alliances and joint ventures.
Along with her other diverse skills, Amy has extensive experience in structuring and drafting agreements for complex franchise, licensing and distribution relationships and in regulatory compliance. She represents start-up and seasoned franchisors through all phases of development.
Amy combines her corporate and franchise experience to provide franchisors with comprehensive legal services to expand their franchise systems. Her experience includes representing franchisors in a myriad of industries to acquire and sell franchise companies of all sizes.
Amy is a current member of the International Franchise Association Women's Franchise Committee and is a Topic and Article Editor for the ABA's Franchise Law Journal. Amy is also an instructor of the “Franchise Mini MBA” program offered by the H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship. She is a past co-chair of the Chicago Chapter of the IFA's Women's Franchise Network and the Chicago Chapter of the IFA's Franchise Business Network. She is a speaker and moderator for conferences and seminars sponsored by the American Bar Association Forum on Franchising and the International Franchise Association ("IFA"). For her work in this area, Amy was named a "Legal Eagle" by the Franchise Times. Amy is honored to be recognized by Who's Who Legal and selected by her peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers of America® 2009 in the field of franchise law.
Before forming Cheng Cohen LLC, Amy was a partner with DLA Piper US LLP and its predecessor firms for her entire career. She was a member of DLA's Commercial, Corporate and Franchise & Distribution Practice Groups.
Amy graduated magna cum laude from the American University's Washington College of Law. She received her undergraduate degree from The University of Michigan. Amy is fluent in Mandarin and Taiwanese.
